Manufacturing Assembly Line Digital Twin

While working at Molex as a process simulation engineer, I led the simulation of a manufacturing assembly line to improve 5S, optimize system performance, and drive cost savings.

I presented this project at the FlexSimposium 2021 user conference.

Some project details have been removed due to confidentiality.

The objective was to improve the existing operating process for an automated assembly line. The simulation focused on the following areas:

  • Reducing WIP around the line
  • Improving the material flow cycle
  • Evaluating material transportation methods
  • Creating a production scheduling strategy

An additional focus was researching the impact of AGV implementation on the assembly line. The following AGV parameters were analyzed:

  • AGV charging logic parameters
  • Task priority and preemption
  • Floor risk zones
  • Path logistics and planning
  • Reduced required operators from 14 to 10 per shift
  • Replaced 2 operator roles with AGVs
  • Increased assembly line throughput by 20%
  • Saved approximately 200 m² of WIP space
